Thrown to the Wolves: The Reality of Job Training

Starting a new job is supposed to be exciting. It’s a fresh opportunity, a chance to grow, to prove yourself, and to build toward the future you’ve been working so hard for. But too often, the “training” process feels less like guidance and more like being thrown to the wolves.
Instead of receiving proper support, step-by-step instruction, or mentorship, many of us are tossed into the deep end with the expectation that we’ll “figure it out.” While learning hands-on is valuable, being left completely unprepared can be exhausting—mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Training should be a period where mistakes are okay, questions are encouraged, and guidance is provided. Yet, more often than not, new employees are met with overwhelming workloads, unclear instructions, and the pressure of having to perform at the same level as seasoned employees from day one. It’s no wonder so many people leave jobs not because they didn’t want them, but because the lack of proper training made it impossible to succeed.
The phrase “sink or swim” sounds motivational until you’re the one treading water with no life vest in sight. Over time, this constant survival mode leads to burnout, frustration, and a deep questioning of whether the effort is even worth it.
It’s tiring. It’s draining. And it’s unfair.
A well-trained employee is a confident and loyal employee. Companies that invest in proper training show they value their people. They create workplaces where learning feels safe, growth feels possible, and employees don’t feel like they’re being set up to fail.
Being thrown to the wolves might sound tough, but in reality, it’s not strength-building—it’s soul-crushing. What employees need is not to be “tested” by fire, but to be guided, supported, and taught so they can truly shine in their roles.
